Location

Margate Old Town is a complete gem – so many shops, cafes, art galleries. It has such a buzz about it. The Old Barrel Store is slap, bang in the middle of the Old Town, but is quietly set back from the main street to enable you to get away from it all too!

Your Host

Your hosts at Old Barrel Store are Sunetra and Jeeshu. We live in London with our son and two dogs, a Patterdale Terrier-Mishti and a Miniature Schnauzer-Kulfi, also the Old Barrel Store mascots.

We enjoy walking, cooking together and Sunday roasts and while Jeeshu loves his PS4, I like gardening and baking. We also love Margate for its quirky, cool charm. In March 2021, we decided to make our love- love relationship with Margate formal by purchasing the Old Barrel Store.

This home is designed to help those staying feel instantly comfortable and relaxed- a cosy cocoon in the middle of Old Town- right in the middle of the best that Margs has to offer!

We make sure the kitchen is stocked with everything you’d need to whisk up an elaborate meal, the bed linen is pure Egyptian cotton and we have a selection of original artwork and historical memorabilia relating to the fabulous property! We also have a sideboard packed with DVDs, 1000s of movies via Now TV and enough paperbacks to sink the Spanish ship that went down off the Margate coast in the 1700s, the mast of which runs through the cottage as its central beam!

In Margate, we love walking the Viking Trail by the coast, sampling gorgeous food and cocktails from the fantastic independent restaurants and bars and our favourite- the Seashell Grotto!

Accommodation

The Old Barrel Store is a genuine piece of local history. The brewery was founded in 1673 and registered as a private company in 1947. Early labels are styled Cobb & Co. Brewers, Wine & Spirit Merchants, Margate. Before 1947 the style became Cobb & Co, Brewers, Margate and from 1947, Cobb & Co. (Brewers) Ltd. Whitbread acquired the company early in 1968 and closed the brewery later that year.

Our house was built around 1800 as part of the Cobb Brewery to store barrels of beer. Now, complete with beams scavenged from old ships, the Old Barrel Store combines the perks of a boutique property with the privacy and independence of a family friendly cottage.

Supper Club

Guests will tuck into a 7-course unique tasting menu from the region of Bengal in the Indian subcontinent.

In Bengal, every meal incorporates a variety of dishes starting with bitter (everything you eat after will taste beautiful!) to sweet, savoury and sweet-n-sour.

The recipes I will use to cook the meal for my guests has been in my family for generations and cannot be compared in taste and flavour to Indian/Bengali restaurant food.

I will talk about the cultural practices of the region, delving into the history of Calcutta, the capital of British Raj and share insights into the food customs. I will also happily share tips and tricks on how to cook the dishes and would love for guests to bring their own insight into the evening.
